take the missus shopping & then go birding guilt free, to lakeside retail park this weekend!! There are 13 - 14 waxwings feeding on the low cotoneaster bushes between argos & pizza hut. They are warily flying into the trees whenever people or cars pass by. I stayed in my van to cut down on disturbance to watch them in the tree tops with a good view. Also a male blackcap was in the trees around the same carpark entrance.

:D

Nice numbers Tony.

They are still creeping south on this side of the country with the odd birds in Taunton, Bristol and north of the Levels but we haven't had the big flocks of previous years.

Last Monday Birdguides texted a Waxwing sighting while the Somerset Ornithological Soc committee were meeting. Everyone individually discreetly checked their pagers. If it hadn't been dark we would have lost the whole committee.

Hawfinches are currently the favourite bird for popping up all over the county and for those with trouble finding birds, the Great White Egret, Cattle Egrets and Whooper and Bewick Swans are good fall-backs here.
