BROWN SHRIKE AT STAINES MOOR, SURREY - M25 JUNCTION 13

Postby Wandering Tattler » Fri Oct 16, 2009 5:55 pm

Rich Seargent navigate away now!

There has been a 1st winter Brown Shrike at Staines Moor for several days. The site is a 5 min drive and 10 minute walk from Junction 13 of the M25.

At Junction 13 follow the dual carriage east towards Staines. At the first large roundabout take the first exit north between the Staines and King George VI reservoires on the A3044. Look for the traffic lights ahead, continue north past the lights and take the next left turn into Horton Road. After c150 metres take the next left turn into Hithermore Road. Drive along Hithermore Road and start to look for parking as the road bears to the right and you can see open ground on your left.

There are two footpaths signposted from the small green, take the second path, which takes you 'RIGHT' along the side of the King George VI reservoir fence. Follow the fence for about 400 metres to a kissing gate on the right. Go through the kissing gate and follow the dirty/mud track to a boardwalk. Walk the boardwalk and over the small bridge to the open field/moor. Walk along the river until you get to a small low footbridge in the middle of the field. The shrike has been seen in the large bushes on the other side of the river, viewed from the bridge area. To stop the bird being flushed please observe from the bridge area.

Good luck to anyone who goes for it!!

Postby Wandering Tattler » Thu Dec 03, 2009 10:39 pm

The Brown Shrike was still at Staines Moor, as described above, on Thursady 3 Dec 09. An even rarer Pacific Diver has again reappeared in Carnsew Basin, Hayle today for anyone visiting the Cornwall this weekend.
