NSG - Week 2

Postby Lesser Spot Finder » Thu Jun 05, 2008 2:01 pm

A cracking week with the main body and a large number of species arriving in the camp. Trips to various locations continue with one or two new species each day. Highlights recently were Montane White-eye and Sooty Flycatcher at the Trout Tree Restaurant just outside Nanyuki. This is a must for anyone travelling up the A2 towards Nanyuki – the trout is fresh, bred in location and extremely unexpected in this part of Africa.

Wednesday’s surprise was two Grey-crowned Cranes which were outside my accommodation in the late afternoon. There aren’t too many places in the world where you get Cranes in your garden. New birds for NSG have included Holub’s Golden and Spectacled Weavers and Northern Puffback. This place is becoming a much better place to be by the day. Cape Robin Chats are currently feeding young in front of my office and Common Waxbill search for seeds around the security post.

A trip to book accommodation at Sweetwaters Game Reserve will require a quick drive around the Savannah and I hope to pick up the illusive Kori’s Bustard. Watch this space.
