More May Weekend Year Firsts

While on a non-birding walk in the Fritham area I was fortunate to add a cuckoo, several redstarts and a honey buzzard to the year list. A nice male pied flycatcher was also on view though I had already ticked one with Bob H in Yarner Wood.

Les Stroud a.k.a. Survivorman is the real deal. Travels to remote locations alone, carrying all his camera gear, and then survives off the land. Makes Bear Grylls et al with their camera crews look a bit like poseurs.

American Bittern

I'm not totally surprised you got a good view. While american bitterns aren't exactly showy, they are a lot easier to see/less skulking than their European cousins. I have had good close views several times in the past year vs a few brief spottings in my UK sojourn.
