Update

I haven't been out and hence have seen little. The rains last week brought a flurry of sightings in Bastion 2 with Crested Larks and the occasional Hoopoe Lark taking advantage of fresh standing water. Masked Wagtails are now much in evidence and a Water Pipit flushed whilst out running was another ...

Andy,

I wish it was warm and sunny. Currently raining with temperatures down to 1 degree. It has its benefits - no dust around at the moment.

See you in 2010.

Green Zone Birding

This is a two week update as during the previous week I had only seen seven Crested Lark, two Hoopoe Lark and fifteen Crowned Sandgrouse, all over Bastion 2. This week has improved and I have been out into the Green Zone to visit both FOBs Shawquat and Pimon and thus have had the chance to bird from...

Much better

This has been a cracking week with two days out on an IRG to PBs Wahid and Pimon and thus a chance to bird whilst on top cover. The move to Wahid took us through the desert to the start of the compounds and the ever expanding fields where the local population was busy sowing Poppy seeds for next yea...

Nowt about!

This has been a strange week. Visible overhead passage over Bastion 2 with Crested Lark and Masked Wagtail unsurprisingly supplying the majority of birds. A lone Flava Wagtail flew south on Wednesday and two Red-throated/Taiga Flycatchers over yesterday. Runs over to Bastion 1 in a vane attempt to s...

News from the AOS Extreme Birding Rep

This week was marred by the deaths of WO1(RSM) Daz Chant, Sgt Telford and Gdsm Major who all died in such terrible circumstances. I had known Daz since he was a young Guardsman in The Queen's Company in the late 80s so his loss was extremely poignant. We have finally moved to Bastion 2 and the final...

There is a God!

There are times in life when any doubts that there is a supreme being are quashed – this week was one of those times. The week had been particularly dull with my chance for of finding another Afghan tick destroyed when I was twice bumped of an IRG due to lack of manning in the JOC (the RAWO has been...

Birding from a Cupola.

The avi-fauna in Bastion is becoming repetitive. That said, I am seeing Red-breasted Flycatchers on a daily basis and do wonder if some of these are the fabled ‘Taiga’ Flycatcher. The field guide ‘Birds of Pakistan’ does not have this bird listed and is possibly an East Asian migrant. However, where...
