Mark, swift visit to Cyprus this week - decompression delayed in UAE. Tried to bird Bloodhound but Padre brief got in the way and I was ordered to sit and listen to top tips to avoid upsetting my family on my return. Did see the following though, mainly from a coach window: Cyprus Wheatear (north of...

The final H16 Missive
A significant moment; this is my last post from AFG. A final trip to the sludge lagoon, I 'borrowed' a vehicle and managed half an hour - I'm glad I did. There has been a significant wader passage although yesterday's White-tailed Lapwing flock was reduced to a single bird. Also present; White-winge...

This could be my last post here. A drive to the far end of the runway to the newly dug sludge lagoon was very productive with White-tailed Lapwing (27), Black-winged Stilt (2), Wood Sandpiper (2), Little-ringed Plover ( 3) and a lone White-winged Black Tern . Also present Crested Lark and a male Cro...

The end is nigh
I returned from a cracking two weeks on R&R to the news that I am returning to the UK a month early to plan the recovery of the battlegroup. I now leave in a few days and have not managed any birding here whatsoever. I know migration will have arrived but due to lack of time and transport I have bee...

Re: Pre R&R Post
STOP PRESS Mixed flock of 200+ Crowned and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse at Runway's End Marsh yesterday. Given the natural regeneration of this area, coupled with the new filter bed some 200m south, I suspect I'll begin to pick-up birds on migration once I get back from R&R. Talking of the filter bed - Du...

Re: Birds of Central Asia
A week after the Bird Fair which seems strange to me. Amazon have not committed a date as yet and you cannot pre-order.roger dickey wrote:Good work Richard. We have to fight for acknowledgement everywhere now. A worth cause though for this book.

Oven Hot
Someone has turned the temperature up and I am now living in a fan assisted oven. Yesterday it was 50 odd degrees centigrade with BearskinnedBirder reporting 57 in his location. Quite how he manages the day in Osprey Body Armour is beyond me. As you’d expect birdlife is diminishing, although I am st...

Mid tour
The last week has increasingly become warmer with afternoon temperatures topping +40oC something that has not been lost on me as I see patrols going out on the computer system from the Ops Room knowing that the guys, in some cases, are carrying in excess of 80kg of extra kit (body armour itself weig...

95% Boredom
The Fun Police have been at work and I now don’t have the ability to write reports from my work computer. Until I get new access, which I am led to believe costs the MOD £500 per account to get, I will again have to use Roger as my conduit to the outside world. Who signs these sort of contracts? I c...

Re: Photographs
A selection of Lesser Spot Finder's photographs are now available to view on Flickr (see http://www.flickr.com/photos/armybirding/sets/72157630058039992/ ). Andy, would you believe that the Fun Police have banned Flikr over here! I'll access in the internet cabins Rich Andy - just checked the site....
